Superettan is a professional association football league in Sweden. It is the second-highest league for men's football teams in the country. Sixteen clubs play in Superettan. Teams can move up to the top league, Allsvenskan, or move down to Ettan (Division 1). The season runs from April to October. Each team plays 30 matches during the season.

The Superettan league started in the year 2000. Before that, the second level of Swedish football had different names and formats.

How the Superettan Season Works

There are 16 football clubs in Superettan. The season begins in April and ends in October. During this time, each club plays every other club twice. This means they play one game at their home stadium and one game at the other team's stadium. In total, each team plays 30 games.

At the end of the season, the top two teams in Superettan get promoted. This means they move up to play in Allsvenskan, which is Sweden's highest football league. The two teams that finish last in Allsvenskan move down to Superettan.

The team that finishes third in Superettan gets a chance to move up. They play a special play-off match against the third-lowest team from Allsvenskan. The winner of this match gets to play in Allsvenskan next season.

Also, the two teams that finish lowest in Superettan move down to Division 1. In their place, the two winning teams from Division 1 move up to Superettan. The teams that finish third and fourth lowest in Superettan also play play-off matches. They compete against the second-placed teams from Division 1. The winners of these play-offs stay in Superettan or get promoted to it.

Watching Superettan on TV

Discovery owns the TV rights for Superettan. Their channel, Eurosport, broadcasts the matches. This agreement started in 2020 and will continue until 2025.
