Superettan is a professional football league in Sweden. It is the second-highest league for men's football teams in the country. Sixteen clubs compete in Superettan. Teams can move up to the top league, Allsvenskan, or be moved down to Ettan.

The league was started in the year 2000. Before that, Sweden's second-tier football had different names and structures.

How the Superettan Season Works

There are 16 football clubs in Superettan. A season runs from April to October. Each club plays every other club twice. This means they play one game at home and one game away. In total, each team plays 30 games during the season.

At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest points are moved down to Ettan. Two new teams from Ettan are promoted to Superettan. The third and fourth lowest teams in Superettan play special "play-off" games. They compete against the second-placed teams from Ettan to decide who stays in Superettan.

The top two teams in Superettan get promoted to Allsvenskan, which is Sweden's highest league. The two lowest teams from Allsvenskan are moved down to Superettan. The third-placed team in Superettan also plays a play-off game. They play against the third-lowest team from Allsvenskan for a chance to be promoted.

Watching Superettan on TV

Since 2020, the TV channel Eurosport has shown Superettan matches. They have the rights to broadcast games until 2025. This means fans can watch many exciting matches on TV.
