Örgryte Idrottssällskap, often called Örgryte IS or just ÖIS, is a Swedish sports club located in Gothenburg. It has four main parts: bowling, football, athletics, and wrestling. However, the club is most famous for its football team. Örgryte IS was started in 1887, making it the oldest active sports club in Sweden!

A Look Back: The History of Örgryte IS

Örgryte IS was founded on December 4, 1887, by Willhem Friberg. The club played in the first football match in Sweden on May 22, 1892. This historic game happened because some lacemakers from Scotland brought football to the club in 1891. Today, you can find memorials in Gothenburg that remember this special match.

Early Football Successes

Örgryte IS was a very strong team in the early days of Swedish football. In 1904, they played a friendly match against an English team called Corinthian FC. As a thank you, the English team gave Örgryte IS a silver cup. This cup, called the Corinthian Bowl, later became a prize for a competition between Sweden's best teams. Örgryte IS won this cup seven times!

In 1908, Örgryte IS opened its own stadium, Walhalla stadium. This was a big event, and the stadium was opened with a match between Örgryte and the German champions, Viktoria Berlin.

Between 1910 and 1924, Örgryte IS played in the Swedish series. Even though it wasn't a national league, it included the top teams. ÖIS won this series in 1910, 1912, and 1924.

Star Players of the Early Years

Two very important players helped Örgryte IS achieve great success. Sven Rydell became Sweden's first big football star. He was known for his speed, amazing dribbling skills, and especially his ability to score goals. Another key player was Carl-Erik Holmberg, who scored an incredible 193 goals for Örgryte IS in the Swedish League. In 1926, the team had a huge win, beating the famous English club Aston Villa 5–2, which was very unusual at the time.

Challenges and Comebacks

In the late 1930s, the team faced some tough times. They struggled in the top league, Allsvenskan, and were eventually moved down to a lower division in 1940.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Örgryte IS played in Division 2. Even though it was a lower league, many fans still came to watch their games. In the 1950s, the team started to get stronger again. They brought in a famous player named Gunnar Gren, who became a player-coach in 1956. His exciting style of play brought huge crowds to ÖIS matches. A young player named Agne Simonsson, who later played for the Swedish national team, was also part of the team during this time.

Modern Era and Club Status

Örgryte IS has won 12 national championship titles and one national cup title. In 2011, the football part of the club faced financial difficulties and was moved down to the third Swedish division. Their home stadium today is Gamla Ullevi. The club is connected to the Göteborgs Fotbollsförbund, which helps organize football in Gothenburg.

In 2007, after 120 years, the youth football section of Örgryte IS started to accept girls into their teams. This was a big step for the club! The team used to play in red shirts and blue shorts, but in 2018, they went back to using their older claret (dark red) shirts.

Who Are the Supporters?

The official supporter club for Örgryte IS is called ÖIS Supporterklubb Balders Hage. There are also other fan groups, like Inferno Örgryte, which is the second largest.

A recent survey showed that Örgryte IS is the fourth most popular football team in Gothenburg. About 9% of football fans in the city support them. Other popular local teams include IFK Göteborg, GAIS, and BK Häcken. Many well-known people are fans of the club, including Marcus and Peter Birro, Weiron Holmberg, Fredrik Ohlsson, Björn Afzelius, and Leif Pagrotsky.

Big Rivalries

In football, a rivalry is when two teams have a strong history of competing against each other, often from the same city. Örgryte IS has its biggest rivalry with IFK Göteborg, another team from Gothenburg. Matches between these two teams have attracted some of the largest crowds in Swedish football history. In 1959, a game between them had 52,194 spectators, which is still a record for the top Swedish league, Allsvenskan! Örgryte IS also has a strong rivalry with GAIS.
