History of Örgryte IS
Örgryte IS was founded on December 4, 1887, by Willhem Friberg. The club played in the first football match in Sweden on May 22, 1892. Football was brought to the club by lacemakers from the Newmilns club in Scotland in 1891. Today, there is a special memorial on Heden in central Gothenburg to remember this match. Another memorial is inside the Liseberg amusement park.
Örgryte IS was very strong in the early days of Swedish football. In 1904, they played a friendly match against the English team Corinthian FC. As a thank you, Corinthian FC gave Örgryte IS a silver cup. This cup, called the Corinthian Bowl, became the prize for a competition between Sweden's best teams the next year.
In 1908, Örgryte IS officially opened its own sports ground, Walhalla stadium. Hugo Levin, a football player and secretary for Örgryte IS, helped build Walhalla. He also held many important roles in Gothenburg football. Walhalla was opened with a match between Örgryte and the German champions Viktoria Berlin.
Between 1910 and 1924, Örgryte IS played in the Swedish series. Even though this league was not officially national, it included the top teams. ÖIS won this series in 1910, 1912, and 1924. In 1924, they won the Western series and then beat AIK in the final.
Two famous players from this time were Sven Rydell and Carl-Erik Holmberg. Sven Rydell became Sweden's first big football star. He was known for his speed, amazing dribbling skills, and especially his ability to score goals. Carl-Erik Holmberg also helped the team a lot, scoring 193 goals for Örgryte IS in the Swedish League. In 1926, the team had a great success, beating the famous English team Aston Villa 5–2, which was a very rare achievement.
In the early 1900s, Örgryte IS also had a bandy team. They became the Gothenburg district champions in bandy in 1917.
In the late 1930s, the football team started to struggle. They finished 10th out of 12 teams in both 1938 and 1939, but managed to avoid moving down to a lower league. However, in 1940, Örgryte IS was moved down from Allsvenskan (the top league) to Division II Västra.
During the 1940s and 1950s, the team played in Division 2. They became more successful in the 1950s. Örgryte attracted many fans, even though they were in a lower division. The team brought in Gunnar Gren, who became a player-coach in 1956. His attacking style of play drew large crowds to ÖIS matches. By 1958, the team was much stronger. A young player named Agne Simonsson was part of the team then. He later played for the Swedish national team.
Örgryte IS has won 12 national championship titles and one national cup title. The club faced some financial difficulties. In February 2011, Örgryte Fotboll AB had to declare bankruptcy. Because of this, Örgryte was moved down to the third Swedish division, Division 1 Södra. Their home stadium is Gamla Ullevi. The club is connected to the Göteborgs Fotbollförbund, which is the Gothenburg Football Association.
In 2007, after 120 years of only having male members, the youth part of the football section started to accept girls. For a long time, Örgryte IS played in red shirts and blue shorts. But in 2018, they changed back to using their older claret (dark red) shirts.
Örgryte IS Supporters
The official fan club for Örgryte IS is called ÖIS Supporterklubb Balders Hage. There are also other groups of fans. The second largest fan group is Inferno Örgryte, which is known for its Ultras-style support.
A recent survey showed that Örgryte IS is the fourth most popular team in Gothenburg. About 9% of football fans in the city support them. Other local teams with many fans include IFK Göteborg, GAIS, and BK Häcken.
Some famous fans of the club are Marcus and Peter Birro, Weiron Holmberg, Fredrik Ohlsson, Björn Afzelius, and Leif Pagrotsky.
Rivalries with Other Teams
Örgryte IS has a strong rivalry with IFK Göteborg, another team from Gothenburg. Matches between these two teams are called derbies and have attracted some of the largest crowds in Swedish football history. In 1959, a match between them had 52,194 spectators, which is still a record for the Allsvenskan league. Örgryte IS also has a big rivalry with GAIS.
