Jan Kromkamp's Football Journey
Starting Out at Go Ahead Eagles and AZ
Jan Kromkamp was born in Makkinga, a town in the Friesland region of the Netherlands. He began his professional football career with Go Ahead Eagles. His first game was on September 12, 1998. It was a home game where his team won 3–0 against FC Top Oss. He played two full seasons with Go Ahead Eagles. In his second season, he scored four goals in 33 games.
In the 2000–01 season, Kromkamp moved to AZ, a team in the Eredivisie. He quickly became a regular player for them. In his fourth year with AZ, the 2003–04 season, he played in all 34 league matches. AZ finished fourth in the league that year. This allowed them to play in the UEFA Cup, a big European competition, where they reached the semifinals.
Playing in Spain and England
At the start of the 2005–06 season, Jan Kromkamp joined Villarreal, a football club in Spain. However, he did not stay there for long. On December 29, 2005, Villarreal and Liverpool from England agreed to swap players. Kromkamp moved to Liverpool, and another player named Josemi went to Villarreal.
Kromkamp played his first game for Liverpool on January 7, 2006. It was an exciting FA Cup match against Luton Town, which Liverpool won 5–3. While at Liverpool, he found it hard to get a regular starting spot. Another player, Steve Finnan, usually played in his position. However, Kromkamp did play in several games as a substitute. He even played in the 2006 FA Cup Final, which Liverpool won. People described him as good at crossing the ball, but not very fast.
Success with PSV and Retirement
After a short time at Liverpool, Kromkamp moved back to the Netherlands. On August 31, 2006, he joined PSV Eindhoven. He took over the number 2 jersey from André Ooijer. In his first two seasons with PSV, he played in 54 league games. PSV won the league championship in both of those seasons. He also played against his former club, Liverpool, in the UEFA Champions League.
From 2008 to 2010, Kromkamp played less often because of injuries. On February 22, 2011, he returned to his first professional team, Go Ahead Eagles. He played for them in the second division until 2013.
On June 23, 2013, when he was 33 years old, Jan Kromkamp announced he was stopping his professional football career. He made this decision because of ongoing knee problems.
Playing for the Netherlands
Jan Kromkamp was first called up to play for the Netherlands national team by coach Marco van Basten. He earned his first cap (which means playing his first game for the national team) on August 18, 2004. It was a friendly match against Sweden that ended in a 2–2 draw. The next year, he became the main right-back for the team.
After Kromkamp moved to Liverpool, coach van Basten said he wished Kromkamp played more regularly for his club. He even called the transfer a "bad move." However, Kromkamp responded by saying he was happy to join Liverpool. He promised to work hard to earn a spot in van Basten's squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In May 2006, the coach announced his final list of 23 players, and Kromkamp was included. Even though he was part of the squad, he did not play in any games during the tournament.
