Jan Kromkamp's Football Journey
Starting Out with Go Ahead Eagles and AZ
Jan Kromkamp was born in Makkinga, a town in the Netherlands. He began his professional football journey with Go Ahead Eagles in 1998. His very first game was on 12 September 1998. It was a great start, as his team won 3–0 against FC Oss.
He played for Go Ahead Eagles for two full seasons. In his second year, he scored four goals in 33 games. This showed he was a talented player.
In 2000, Kromkamp moved to AZ, a team in the Eredivisie. He quickly became a regular starter for the team. In the 2003–04 season, he played in all 34 league matches. AZ finished fourth that year, which allowed them to play in the UEFA Cup. They even reached the semifinals of this big European competition.
Playing in Spain and England
At the start of the 2005–06 season, Jan Kromkamp signed with Villarreal. This is a football club in Spain's top league, La Liga. He played a few games for them.
However, on 29 December 2005, Villarreal and Liverpool in England made a player exchange deal. Kromkamp moved to Liverpool, and another player, Josemi, went to Villarreal.
Kromkamp played his first game for Liverpool on 7 January 2006. It was an exciting 5–3 win against Luton Town in the FA Cup. While at Liverpool, he often came on as a substitute. He even played in the 2006 FA Cup Final, which Liverpool won. He was known for being good at crossing the ball.
Success with PSV and Retirement
Kromkamp played one league game for Liverpool in the 2006–07 season. On 31 August 2006, he was sold to PSV Eindhoven, another big Dutch club. He took over the number 2 jersey.
He played many games for PSV in his first two seasons. PSV won the league championship in both of those years. He also played against his former club, Liverpool, in the UEFA Champions League.
From 2008 to 2010, Kromkamp played less often because of injuries. On 22 February 2011, he returned to his first professional team, Go Ahead Eagles. He played for them again in the second division.
On 23 June 2013, when he was 33 years old, Jan Kromkamp announced he was retiring from professional football. He had ongoing knee problems that made it difficult to continue playing.
International Career with the Netherlands
Jan Kromkamp was first called up to play for the Dutch national team by coach Marco van Basten. He earned his first cap (which means his first game for the national team) on 18 August 2004. It was a friendly match against Sweden that ended in a 2–2 draw. In the next year, he became the main right-back for the team.
After Kromkamp moved to Liverpool, coach van Basten said he wished Jan played more often for his club. However, Kromkamp was happy to join Liverpool and worked hard. In May 2006, van Basten announced his final list of 23 players for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Kromkamp was on the list, which was a great achievement, even though he didn't play during the tournament itself.
