Jan Provoost (born between 1462 and 1465, died in January 1529) was a talented Belgian painter. He was born in a town called Mons.

Jan Provoost was a very busy artist. He started his first workshop in Valenciennes. Later, he opened two more workshops at the same time! One was in Bruges, where he became a citizen in 1494. The other was in Antwerp, which was a very important city for trade back then. Besides painting, Provoost was also good at drawing maps, designing things, and building. In 1520, he met another famous artist, Albrecht Dürer, in Antwerp. Some people think a drawing by Dürer in London might be a portrait of Provoost. He married the wife of a painter named Simon Marmion after Simon passed away. Jan Provoost inherited a lot of money and property from Simon. Jan Provoost died in Bruges in January 1529.

Jan Provoost's Art Style

Jan Provoost's religious paintings show influences from other well-known artists like Gerard David and Hans Memling. One of his most famous paintings is The Last Judgement, which he painted for the town hall in Bruges in 1525. This is the only painting we know for sure was painted by him because of old records.

Sometimes, new discoveries are still made! In 1971, a large painting of the Crucifixion from a small church in Koolkerke was identified as Provoost's work. This painting is now on display at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges. This museum has several of Provoost's artworks. A special exhibition showing many of his paintings was held in 2008 and 2009.
