Biography

Sarah Cowell by Jane Bartlett
This is a portrait of Sarah Cowell Le Moyne, painted by Jane E. Bartlett in 1877.

Jane Bartlett was born in Harmony, Maine. In the late 1860s, she studied art in Boston with a famous teacher named William Morris Hunt. She learned a special way of painting portraits from him. Her style was quick and natural, focusing on the main parts without too many small details.

Before returning to Boston in 1877, she lived in Colorado and Minnesota. When she came back to Boston, she worked from her art studio on South Russell Street until 1887. After that, she continued to paint in other studios in Boston. In 1907, Kansas State Agricultural College asked her to paint portraits of their past college presidents.

Awards and Recognition

Jane Bartlett showed two of her paintings at a big exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. She also won a silver medal at a fair in Massachusetts in 1880. Art critics at the time praised her work. They said she had a "fresh, strong hand" and a natural way of seeing and painting things. They also liked her "strong heads," which looked bold and confident.

Today, one of Bartlett's portraits is on display at the Brooklyn Museum. It is a painting of the actress Sarah Cowell Le Moyne.
