Dame Xiangqian "Jane" Jiang (born in 1955) is a very important scientist. She is a Professor of Precision Metrology at the University of Huddersfield in the UK. Metrology is the science of measurement. It's all about making sure things are measured super accurately!

Professor Jiang is also the Chief Scientist at the Centre for Precision Technologies. She leads a big project called the EPSRC Future Advanced Metrology Hub. This project helps make manufacturing more sustainable using advanced measurement techniques. She also holds a special position as the Royal Academy Engineering/Renishaw Chair in Precision Metrology.

Becoming a Scientist

Early Life and Education

Jane Jiang's family had to leave their home in Shanghai, China, in 1970. At just 15 years old, she started working as an apprentice. She worked on a bus production line in China. Through hard work, she became a skilled technician and engineer.

She later went to Huazhong University of Science and Technology. There, she earned her Masters degree in 1992. She continued her studies and received her PhD in 1995. Her PhD research was about how to measure the shape of curved surfaces very precisely.

Awards for Early Work

In 1999, Jane Jiang won an award for having the best PhD paper of the decade in China. The Chinese Ministry of Education also gave her a special professorship. She also received an award for being an Outstanding Young Scientist.

A Career in Measurement

Joining UK Universities

In 1994, Jane Jiang moved to the UK. She started working at City, University of London. Later, she joined the University of Birmingham. In 1997, her research group moved to the University of Huddersfield. This is where the Centre for Precision Technologies was started.

She became a Professor in 2003. She led the group that studies how to measure surfaces very accurately. In 2006, she was invited to meet Queen Elizabeth II. This was to celebrate people who had made important contributions to the country.

Leading Big Projects

In 2011, Professor Jiang organized a workshop about "Ultra-precision Engineering." This is about making things with extreme accuracy. She became the Director of the EPSRC National Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology.

She also became the Royal Academy Engineering/Renishaw Chair in Precision Metrology. This job involves doing research that helps industries. It focuses on measuring and checking items during the manufacturing process.

Impact and Recognition

Professor Jiang has helped secure over £13 million for research projects. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This means she is recognized as a top engineer.

In 2017, she became the leader of a huge £30 million project. This project, called the EPSRC Future Advanced Metrology hub, aims to use measurement science and data in manufacturing. She is also a Chartered Engineer. This shows she has high professional standards in engineering.

She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. This group promotes arts, manufactures, and commerce. She was given the title of Dame in 2017. This is a very high honor in the UK.
