Jane Wagner (born February 26, 1935) is an American writer, director, and producer. She is well-known for her work with the famous comedian Lily Tomlin. Jane has written many of Lily's comedy shows and specials. They have worked together for a long time and are also married.

Early Life and Learning
Jane Wagner grew up in Morristown, Tennessee. Even when she was young, she loved to write. She wrote for her school newspaper at Morristown High School. When she was 17, Jane moved to New York City. There, she studied painting and sculpture at the School of Visual Arts. She also tried to become an actress.
Her Amazing Career
Early in her career, Jane traveled with the Barter Theatre group. She also worked as a designer for big companies like Kimberly-Clark.
How She Started Writing
Jane first became a writer for TV with a special called J.T. in 1969. This show won a special award called the Peabody Award. This award got the attention of Lily Tomlin. Lily was looking for someone to help create new ideas for her character, Edith Ann, from the show Laugh-In. This was the start of a long and successful partnership between Jane and Lily. They still work together today!

Jane Wagner has won many important awards for her work. She has won three Emmy Awards and a Writers Guild of America award. These awards were for the TV specials she created with Lily Tomlin. She has also been nominated for Grammy Awards for their comedy albums.
Jane wrote and directed a movie called Moment by Moment. It starred Lily Tomlin and John Travolta. She also wrote another movie for Lily Tomlin called The Incredible Shrinking Woman.
Her play, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, won her a special award from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. It also won a New York Drama Desk Award. When the play was made into a movie, Jane won a Cable ACE Award for it.
Jane won another Peabody Award for the TV special Edith Ann's Christmas: Just Say Noel in 1996.

Her Personal Life
Jane Wagner met Lily Tomlin in March 1971. Lily saw Jane's TV special J.T. and was very impressed. She invited Jane to Los Angeles to work together on Lily's comedy album. After being together for 42 years, Jane and Lily got married. They had a private ceremony in Los Angeles on December 31, 2013.
