Janet Heatley Blunt (born 1859, died 1950) was a British woman who loved and studied old traditions. She is known as a folklorist, which means she collected and saved stories, songs, and dances from the past.

Who Was Janet Heatley Blunt?

Janet Heatley Blunt was a very important person in saving old English traditions. She spent her life making sure that special folk songs and dances were not forgotten. Her work helps us understand the history of music and dance in England.

Early Life and Moving to England

Janet was born in 1859. Her father, Charles Harris Blunt, was a British general. Because of her father's work, Janet spent her first 30 years living in India. This was a time when India was part of the British Empire.

Later, she moved to a village called Adderbury in Oxfordshire, England. It was here that she became very interested in the local traditions. She wanted to learn about the old songs and dances that people in the village knew.

Saving Morris Dance Traditions

Janet Blunt's biggest contribution was saving the folk traditions of Adderbury. She was especially interested in Morris dancing. This is a traditional English folk dance, usually performed by groups of men. Dancers often wear special costumes with bells and use sticks or handkerchiefs.

Morris dancing was very popular in the Adderbury area in the early 1800s. However, by the late 1880s, it had almost completely disappeared. Janet Blunt worked hard to record everything she could about these dances. She wrote down the steps, the music, and the names of the dancers.

Her detailed notes, along with those of another folklorist named Cecil Sharp, were very important. Because of their careful work in 1916 and 1918, Morris dancing was brought back to life in Adderbury in 1974. Today, people still perform these dances exactly as Janet Blunt recorded them.

Remembering Janet Blunt Today

The village of Adderbury still remembers Janet Blunt and her amazing work. Every year, during their annual Morris dance celebrations, they honor her memory.

In 2009, a special blue plaque was placed on Le Hall Place in Adderbury. A blue plaque is a sign that tells people that a famous person lived or worked in that building. It helps everyone remember Janet Blunt's important role in preserving English heritage.
