Janina Bauman's Life Story

Early Life and Family

Janina Bauman was born in Warsaw, Poland. Her father, Szymon Lewinson, was a doctor and an officer in the Polish Army. Sadly, he was killed during World War II in a tragic event known as the Katyn massacre. Her mother was Alina, and she had a younger sister named Zofia.

Surviving World War II

During World War II, Janina, her mother, and her sister were forced to live in the Warsaw Ghetto. This was a special area in Warsaw where Jewish people were made to live by the Nazis. It was a very difficult and dangerous time. Luckily, they managed to escape from the ghetto. A kind farming family in the countryside helped them hide and stay safe.

Education and New Beginnings

After the war ended, Janina studied journalism at the Warsaw Academy of Political and Social Science. This is where she met her future husband, Zygmunt Bauman. She later worked in the film industry, helping with translations, research, and editing movie scripts.

Moving to a New Country

In 1968, Janina and her husband left Poland. This was because of unfair treatment against Jewish people in Poland at that time. They first moved to Israel. After three years, they decided to settle permanently in Leeds, England. Janina lived in Leeds for the rest of her life.

Family Life

Janina married Zygmunt Bauman (1925–2017). They had three daughters together.
