Janine Nabers is an American writer. She is known for creating plays and writing for television shows. She has worked on popular TV series like Watchmen and Atlanta. She also helped create the series Swarm.

Early Life and Education

Janine Nabers was born in Houston, Texas. Her parents are Janet and Cornelius Nabers. She went to Alief Elsik High School in Houston.

She studied theater at Ithaca College. Then, she earned a master's degree in playwriting from The New School. She also graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City. This is a very famous school for performing arts.

Career

Writing for the Stage

Janine Nabers first wanted to be an actress. However, she noticed there were not many roles for Black actors in plays. This inspired her to start writing her own stories for the stage.

While at Juilliard, her play Annie Bosh is Missing was a finalist for a big playwriting competition in 2012-2013. The play was first performed at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2013.

Another play by Nabers, Serial Black Face, won the 2014 Yale Drama Series prize. This play is about a mother dealing with her son's disappearance. Winning the award meant her play was published by Yale University Press. Serial Black Face was first performed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2016.

Her other plays include A Swell in the Ground, which premiered in Chicago, Illinois in 2017. She also wrote Welcome to Jesus, which was first performed in Chicago in 2017. Other works are Juniper; Jubilee and The Peterson Show.

Writing for Television

Janine Nabers has also written for many television shows. Her TV writing credits include Bravo's first scripted series Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. She also wrote for Lifetime's UnREAL and AMC's Dietland.

She was a Supervising Producer for the first two episodes of HBO's Watchmen. She was also a Co-Executive Producer on Netflix's Away. Nabers was a writer for the third season of Atlanta.

In 2021, she signed a special deal with Amazon Studios to create more shows. In 2023, a series she co-created with Donald Glover called Swarm was released on Amazon’s Prime Video.

Awards and Recognitions

Janine Nabers has received many awards and fellowships for her writing. In 2011, she received the Page 73 Playwriting Fellowship. She was also named a New York Theatre Workshop Playwriting Fellow in 2012.

She won the 2013 New York Foundation for the Arts Playwriting fellowship. She was also the AETNA Playwriting Fellow at Hartford Stage from 2013 to 2014.

Nabers has been part of many important writing programs. These include the Ars Nova Play Group and the Sundance Theatre Labs. In 2018, she won the Fadiman Playwriting Award for her play The Peterson Show.

As a supervising producer for HBO's Watchmen, Nabers was nominated for Writers Guild of America Awards. She won the Best New Series award in 2020 for her work on Watchmen.
