Janusz Tazbir (born August 5, 1927 – died May 3, 2016) was a very important Polish historian. He was a top expert in the history of Poland, especially focusing on its culture and religions during the 16th and 17th centuries. These centuries were from the 1500s to the 1600s. He also helped lead a group that worked on German and Polish school textbooks from 1991 to 1997.

A Life in History

Janusz Tazbir was a leading expert in old Polish history. He wrote more than 1000 books and articles! One of his most famous books is Państwo bez stosów, which means "A country without stakes." It was published in 1967. This book was about how Poland was a place of religious tolerance during a time when many other countries were not.

He also wrote books that made history easier for everyone to understand. His works were translated into many languages, including English and French. This helped people all over the world learn about Polish history.

His Education and Work

In 1950, Janusz Tazbir finished his studies at the University of Warsaw. He earned a Master of Arts degree. A few years later, in 1954, he earned his Ph.D. He then continued his studies and became a professor.

From 1965, he was the main editor of an important history magazine called Odrodzenie i reformacja w Polsce. This means "The Renaissance and Reformation in Poland." He also became a professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of History in 1966. He even led this institute from 1983 to 1990. By 1973, he was a full professor, and in 1989, he became a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

He also led the Science Council of the Polski Słownik Biograficzny, which is the Polish Biographical Dictionary. This is a huge project that collects information about important Polish people throughout history.
