The Japanese Wikipedia is the version of Wikipedia written in the Japanese language. It's like a giant online encyclopedia, free for everyone to read! It started on May 11, 2001.
This amazing project grew very quickly. By April 2006, it had 200,000 articles. In June 2008, it reached 500,000 articles. As of May 2018, the Japanese Wikipedia has more than 1,106,000 articles!
Many people help make the Japanese Wikipedia. In April 2016, about 4,192 active editors worked on it. These editors made at least five changes that month. This made the Japanese Wikipedia the fourth largest in terms of active editors, after the English, Spanish, and Russian versions.
Awards and Recognition
The Japanese Wikipedia has even won special awards! In September 2004, it received the "2004 Web Creation Award Web-Person Special Prize." This award comes from the Japan Advertisers Association.
This prize is usually given to people who have done great things for the internet in Japan. A long-time contributor accepted the award for the entire project. This shows how important the Japanese Wikipedia is.
