Jaren Walter Jackson Sr. (born October 27, 1967) is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Incarnate Word Cardinals.

Jaren Jackson Sr. played as a shooting guard (a player who specializes in scoring points). He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He went to Georgetown University from 1985 to 1989. He earned a degree in finance. Even though he was not picked in the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, he played for 13 seasons. He is best known for his time with the San Antonio Spurs. He helped them win their first NBA championship in 1999.

Jaren Jackson's Basketball Career

Playing for Many Teams (1989–1997)

After college, Jaren Jackson was not chosen in the NBA draft. But, the New Jersey Nets signed him as a free agent in 1989. He played only 28 games that year. Later, he played in other basketball leagues.

He had short times with the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers. He played 34 games for the Clippers in the 1992–93 season. The next year, he played 29 games for the Portland Trail Blazers. He then joined the Philadelphia 76ers. He started his first NBA game with them on December 17, 1994.

After leaving the 76ers, he had a very short time with the Houston Rockets. Then, he signed with the Washington Bullets before the 1996–97 season. With the Bullets, Jackson played his longest NBA season. He played in 75 games. He was a backup player and scored about 5 points per game. He also made a career-high 53 three-point shots.

Winning a Championship with the San Antonio Spurs (1997–2001)

After playing for the Bullets, Jackson signed with the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs had two amazing players: David Robinson and Tim Duncan. The 1997–98 season was Jackson's best. He started in 45 out of 82 games. He scored a career-high 8.8 points per game. He also made 112 three-pointers that year.

Jackson played a big role in the playoffs that year. The Spurs won their first playoff series. They then lost in the next round. Jackson started in 8 of 9 playoff games. He even scored more points, averaging 10.2 points in the playoffs.

The next season (1998–99) was shorter because of a league lockout. But the Spurs still used Jackson as a key backup player. He played in 47 games and started 13. He averaged 6.4 points per game.

The Spurs, led by Robinson and Duncan, became the top team in the playoffs. They beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round. Then, they swept (won all games) against the Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson played very well against the Lakers. He scored 22 points in one game and 20 points in another. He made 6 three-point shots in those games.

Next, the Spurs faced the Portland Trail Blazers. They swept them too! Their teammate Sean Elliott made a famous three-point shot to win game 2. Jackson scored 19 points in game 3. The Spurs then went to the NBA Finals to play the New York Knicks.

In his first Finals game, Jackson scored 17 points. The Spurs won the first two games at home. The Knicks won game 3 in New York. But the Spurs were too strong. They won the next two games in Madison Square Garden. This meant they won the series and the NBA Championship! Jackson scored 11 points in the final game. He averaged 8.2 points during their championship run.

The next season, Jackson continued as a backup for the Spurs. He played in 81 games. The Spurs lost in the first round of the playoffs because Tim Duncan was injured. Jackson played only two games in that series. In the 2000–01 season, Jackson played in only 16 games. The team brought in younger guards, so he did not play in the playoffs.

Retirement from Playing

Jackson joined the Orlando Magic for the end of the 2001–02 season. He played in 9 regular season games and 3 playoff games. After that, he retired from playing professional basketball.

Coaching Career

He was an assistant coach for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA Development League (D-League). He later became their head coach for a season. He also returned as an assistant coach for them in 2014–15.

Jackson was also the head coach for the Saint John Millrats and the Ottawa SkyHawks. Both teams are part of the National Basketball League of Canada.
