Jaren Walter Jackson Sr. (born October 27, 1967) is an American basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Incarnate Word Cardinals.
Jaren Jackson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He played basketball at Georgetown University from 1985 to 1989. He studied finance in college. Even though he was not chosen in the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, he played for 13 seasons. He is most famous for his time with the San Antonio Spurs. He helped them win their first NBA championship in 1999.

Playing Career Highlights
Starting His NBA Journey (1989–1997)
After college, Jaren Jackson joined the New Jersey Nets in 1989. He played in 28 games that year. He also played in other basketball leagues. He had short times with teams like the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers.
Later, he played for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Philadelphia 76ers. He started his first NBA game in December 1994. Before joining the Washington Bullets for the 1996–97 season, he also played a short time with the Houston Rockets.
With the Washington Bullets, Jackson played his longest NBA season. He played in 75 games. He scored about 5 points per game. He also made a career-high 53 three-point shots.
Winning a Championship with the Spurs (1997–2001)
After the 1997 season, Jackson joined the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs had great players like David Robinson and Tim Duncan. The 1997–98 season was Jackson's best. He started in 45 out of 82 games. He scored a career-high 8.8 points per game. He also made 112 three-pointers that year.
The Spurs did well in the playoffs that year. Jackson played a big role, starting in 8 of 9 playoff games. He scored 10.2 points per game in the playoffs.
The next season (1998–99) was shorter because of a league lockout. Jackson continued to be a key backup player for the Spurs. He played in 47 games and started 13. He averaged 6.4 points per game.
The Spurs, led by Robinson and Duncan, had a fantastic playoff run. They beat the Minnesota Timberwolves and then swept the Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson played very well against the Lakers. He scored 22 points in one game and 20 points in another. He made 6 three-point shots in one of those games.
Next, the Spurs swept the Portland Trail Blazers. Jackson scored 19 points in one game. The Spurs then faced the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals. Jackson scored 17 points in his first Finals game. The Spurs won the series and became NBA champions! Jackson scored 11 points in the final game. He averaged 8.2 points during their championship journey.
Jackson continued to play for the Spurs the next season. He played in 81 games. The Spurs lost in the first round of the playoffs that year. This was partly because Tim Duncan was injured. In the 2000–01 season, Jackson played in fewer games. The team brought in younger players.
Retiring from Playing
Jaren Jackson played his last NBA games for the Orlando Magic in the 2001–02 season. He played in 9 regular season games and 3 playoff games before he retired as a player.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Jaren Jackson became a basketball coach. He coached in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) for the Gary Steelheads and Pittsburgh Xplosion.
He also worked as an assistant coach for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA Development League (D-League). He later became their head coach. He returned to the Mad Ants as an assistant coach for the 2014–15 season.
Jackson has also been a head coach for teams in the National Basketball League of Canada. These teams include the Saint John Millrats and the Ottawa SkyHawks.
In January 2021, he became an assistant coach for the Westchester Knicks. As of May 2023, Jackson is an assistant coach for the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team.
Personal Life
Jaren Jackson is married to Terri Carmichael Jackson. She is the director of operations at the Women's National Basketball Players Association.
They have a son named Jaren Jackson Jr.. He played college basketball for Michigan State. In 2018, he was chosen as the 4th overall pick in the NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
