When he first started, Impey played as a defender. His job was to stop small forwards from scoring. He did well against tough players like Hayden Ballantyne and Eddie Betts. In 2014, he was nominated for the NAB Rising Star award. This award celebrates young players who show great talent.

For his great performance, he won the Gavin Wanganeen Medal. This award is given to Port Adelaide's best player under 21 years old.
Moving to Hawthorn
Jarman Impey missed the first game of the 2017 season due to a club suspension. However, he quickly got back on track. In a game against Brisbane, he kicked a career-high four goals.
After the 2017 season, Impey moved to the Hawthorn Football Club. This happened during the trade period. In 2019, he suffered a serious knee injury (an Anterior cruciate ligament injury) while playing against Geelong. This injury meant he could not play for the rest of that season.
