Jarreau (pronounced Jah Row) is a small community in Louisiana, United States. It is an "unincorporated community," which means it is a group of homes and businesses that are part of a larger area called Pointe Coupee Parish. Jarreau is located about 30 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, a bigger city.
The community sits right on the edge of a special lake called False River. This lake is an "ox-bow lake," which means it used to be a bend in a river that got cut off. Jarreau is on the southern end of this lake, in a spot known as "The Island." You can reach the community by Louisiana Highway 413, which locals call Island Road. The Jarreau Post Office (ZIP code 70749) is located on Boulevard D' Isle.
Jarreau is a popular spot for fishing and boating. The main public boat launch on the southern end of False River, called Jerry's Landing, is located here. Some local businesses, like Parrot's Bar and Horseshoe Auto Parts, were even shown in the 2002 movie "The Badge" starring Billy Bob Thornton.
History of Jarreau
The community of Jarreau is named after a man named Elie Jarreau. He was the very first postmaster for the area. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
The first post office in Jarreau opened in July 1912. It was set up inside a general store that Mr. Jarreau owned. Elie Jarreau worked as the postmaster for a long time, serving the community for 40 years!
