Jarrett J. Krosoczka (pronounced krə-ZOSS-kə) is a talented American author and illustrator. He is famous for creating many graphic novels and picture books. His most well-known series is Lunch Lady, which is very popular with young readers. He was born on December 22, 1977, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

About Jarrett J. Krosoczka's Life

Jarrett J. Krosoczka was raised by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Shirley Krosoczka. They became his legal guardians when he was three years old. This was because his mother faced personal challenges that made it difficult for her to care for him. He did not learn the full story about his mother's situation until he was in fourth grade.

Honoring His Grandparents

The letter "J" in his professional name is a special tribute to his late grandfather. To honor his grandparents, he also started the Joseph and Shirley Krosoczka Memorial Youth Scholarships. These scholarships are at the Worcester Art Museum. They help children from difficult family situations get art lessons.

Education and Early Career

Krosoczka studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He received his first book contract just six months after graduating. His very first book, Good Night, Monkey Boy, was published on June 12, 2001. It was released by Random House. Krosoczka also taught at Montserrat College of Art for four years.

Awards and Adaptations

In 2003, Print magazine named Krosoczka one of their "20 Top New Visual Artists Under 30." His Lunch Lady series was even considered for a movie by Universal Pictures. The famous actress Amy Poehler was thought to play the lead role. Other companies like DreamWorks Animation and MGM have also shown interest in his work. An animated version of his book Peanut Butter and Jellyfish was made by Weston Woods.

His graphic novel Hey, Kiddo was a finalist for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature in 2018. It also won the 2019 Harvey Award for Book of the Year.
