Early Life and Education
Jarrett Williams grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He first discovered comics by reading the comic strip section of The Times-Picayune newspaper. When he was a child, Williams was quite shy. He loved drawing, reading, playing with Lego, and video games. He often visited the Crescent City Comic Shop in New Orleans. This is where he first saw many different comics.
Williams went to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. He finished his studies in the school's Visual Arts Program. In 2002, he joined the Savannah College of Art and Design. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sequential Art in 2006. He then received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sequential Art in 2010. Sequential Art is about telling stories using pictures, like in comics.
His Career as a Comic Creator
While in college, Williams mostly worked on his first web-comic, Lunar Boy Land. He updated this comic every Monday and Wednesday from 2003 to 2007. Eventually, he collected Lunar Boy into two graphic novel books.
Creating Super Pro K.O.!
In 2008, Williams stopped working on Lunar Boy. He wanted to create a new comic about pro-wrestling. This new comic was called Super Pro K.O.!. Williams had been a pro-wrestling fan since he was a kid. He wanted to see if he could draw different types of stories. He also wanted to make a comic about pro-wrestling that included his own experiences.
Super Pro K.O.! was first planned to be a web-comic. But Williams decided to make it into a longer graphic novel series. In 2008 and 2009, Williams brought small comic books (called mini-comics) of Super Pro K.O.! to comic conventions. These are big events where comic fans meet creators. Editors from Oni Press saw his work there.
Working on Rick and Morty
With Tony Fleecs, Williams also helped draw the Rick and Morty comic series. This was a limited series called Rick and Morty: Worlds Apart. Josh Trujillo wrote the story. It was published from February to May 2021.
How He Creates His Comics
Williams' drawing style mixes two main influences. It combines classic American comic storytelling with manga. Manga are Japanese comics that influenced him a lot when he was a teenager.
Williams was greatly inspired by comic books like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also mentions many newspaper comic strips as influences. These include Curtis, Peanuts, and Calvin and Hobbes. Manga like Ranma ½, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball also played a big part. Williams also gets ideas from many video games.
