Jasbinder Singh "Jas" Mann (born 24 April 1970) is a British musician, singer, and producer. He is best known as the lead singer of the band Babylon Zoo. His band had a huge hit song called "Spaceman" in 1996. Their album, The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes, also did very well.
Early life
Jas Mann was born in 1970 in Dudley, England. His father was from the Punjabi region of India. His mother had Sioux heritage.
When he was 15, Jas Mann started his first band. It was called The Glove Puppets. He even paid for their first record himself! He sold it in local music shops in 1987.
In 1988, Jas joined another band from Wolverhampton called The Sandkings. The band was named after a science fiction story. With Jas as their singer, The Sandkings released many songs and an album. They had three songs that reached the top 10 on the UK indie music charts. The Sandkings also opened shows for famous bands like Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. Jas Mann later left the band because he wanted to try new musical ideas.
Babylon Zoo's big hit
In January 1996, Jas Mann's new band, Babylon Zoo, released the song "Spaceman." This song became super popular after it was used in a Levi's jeans commercial. It quickly reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart.
"Spaceman" sold 420,000 copies in its first week. This made it the fastest-selling single in the United Kingdom in over 30 years! The only song that sold faster was The Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love." "Spaceman" became a No. 1 hit in 23 countries around the world. By 2012, it was one of the best-selling singles ever in the UK, selling over 1.14 million copies.
Babylon Zoo also released an album called The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes in 1996. This album reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Two more songs from the album, "Animal Army" and "The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes", also made it into the top 40.
Three years later, in 1999, Babylon Zoo released another album called King Kong Groover. However, this album and its single, "All the Money's Gone", were not as successful.
After "Spaceman"
After the success of "Spaceman," Jas Mann continued to work on music and other projects. In 2004, he asked his fans to help him write new songs. He held a competition where fans could sum up their lives in one word. He planned to use these words in the lyrics for a new album. In 2005, he announced a new Babylon Zoo album called Cold Clockwork Doll, but it has not been released yet.
Jas Mann also became involved in the film industry. In 2008, he helped start the Indomina Group. This was a film studio based in Los Angeles and the Dominican Republic. In 2011, Indomina Group worked with Pinewood Group to create Pinewood Indomina Studios. This studio is located in the Dominican Republic. Indomina helped distribute films like The Imposter (2012).
Jas Mann is also a board member of the International Child Art Foundation. This charity helps provide art programs in schools for children. In 2013, he also helped start Virgin Produced India. This is a film production company that works with the Virgin Group.
