Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I was a powerful ruler, or ajaw, of the ancient Maya city of Tikal. He is also known by other names like Ruler A, Ah Cacao, and Sky Rain. He became king on May 3, 682, and ruled Tikal until he passed away in 734.

About Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I

Before experts could fully understand the Maya script, this ruler was often called Tikal Ruler A or given the nickname Ah Cacao. His real name, Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil, was discovered later.

Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I was one of Tikal's most famous leaders. His rule was very important because it came after a long time (about 130 years) when not much was recorded about Tikal's history.

Tikal's Comeback

A major achievement during his reign was the defeat of Calakmul, a rival Maya city, in 695. This victory showed that Tikal was strong and important again. It helped Tikal become a powerful city once more.

Buildings and Burial Sites

Two special buildings at Tikal are connected to Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I:

  • Tikal Temple I: This is a tall, stepped pyramid. It was built in the classic Petén style, which is common in the Maya region. This temple served as Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I's tomb, where he was buried.
  • Tikal Temple II: This temple was built as the tomb for his wife, Lady Lahan Unen Moʼ, who died around 704.

Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil I's son, Yikʼin Chan Kʼawiil, became the next ruler of Tikal after him.
