Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jason is a small community in eastern North Carolina, United States. It is located in Greene County. Jason is an "unincorporated community." This means it is a place with a shared identity, but it doesn't have its own local government like a town or city.

Jason was officially recognized as a community in 1885. It is mostly a farming area. The community has its own water system and a volunteer fire department to help keep everyone safe. You can find Jason about halfway between the towns of Snow Hill and LaGrange along Highway 903.

A Look at History

Jason has a long and interesting past.

Early Settlers and Names

The area was first called "Aloc" by the Tuscarora Indian tribe. The name "Aloc" meant "leave alone." Later, families like the Hardy, Mewborn, Aldridge, and Kearney families settled in the area. They helped build the community into what it is today.

Old Cotton Mill

Long ago, there was a cotton mill on the north side of Jason. This mill was very important because it was one of the first cotton mills in all of Greene County. It helped the community grow by providing jobs and processing cotton from local farms.

Important Landmarks

One special building in Jason is the Benjamin W. Best House. This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Being on this list means the house is an important part of American history and culture.
