Jason Nono Mayélé (born 4 January 1976 – died 2 March 2002) was a professional football player from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He played as a forward, which means he was usually one of the main players trying to score goals for his team.
Jason Mayélé's Football Journey
Jason Mayélé was a talented football player who could play as a striker (a goal scorer) or a winger (a player who runs down the sides of the field). He played for several clubs during his career.
He started his professional journey in France with LB Châteauroux. Later, he moved to Italy, where he played for Cagliari Calcio.
In 2001, Jason joined Chievo, an Italian team. This was a special time for Chievo because it was their first season in Serie A, which is the top football league in Italy. Jason helped the team play so well that they even qualified for European competitions!
Jason also proudly represented his home country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He played for his national team in the Africa Cup of Nations, a big tournament for African countries.
Remembering Jason
Sadly, Jason Mayélé passed away at the young age of 26. On 2 March 2002, he was in a car accident while trying to catch his team's bus for a match against Parma. He was taken to the hospital, but he died from his injuries.
To honor Jason and remember his contribution to the team, Chievo decided to retire his shirt number, which was 30. This means no other player on Chievo will wear the number 30 jersey. It's a way to keep his memory alive and show how much he meant to the club.
