Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park (Spanish: Parque nacional Jaua-Sarisariñama) was a very special place in southeastern Venezuela. It was located in the Guayana Highlands within Bolívar State. This park was created in 1978 to protect its amazing natural features.

Today, Jaua-Sarisariñama is no longer a separate park. It has become part of a much larger protected area called Caura National Park, which was established in 2017. This change helps protect even more of Venezuela's incredible wilderness.

Discovering Jaua-Sarisariñama

This national park was famous for its unique landscape. It featured three huge, flat-topped mountains called tepuis. These mountains are made of sandstone and stand tall above the surrounding land.

The Amazing Tepuis

The three main tepuis in the park were Jaua, Sarisariñama, and Guanacoco. Tepuis are like natural fortresses, often having very different plants and animals on their flat tops compared to the land below.

Sarisariñama's Sinkholes

One of the most incredible features was on top of Sarisariñama. This tepui's flat top was covered in thick forest. But hidden within this forest were giant sinkholes! These are huge, deep holes in the ground, almost like natural pits. They are so unique and mysterious, making Sarisariñama a truly special place.

Wildlife of the Park

Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park was recognized as an Important Bird Area. This means it's a crucial place for many different kinds of birds. Protecting this area helps keep these bird populations healthy.

Cool Birds and Frogs

One of the birds that lives here is the Tepui parrotlet (Nannopsittaca panychlora). This small, green parrot is perfectly suited to live in the tepui environment.

The park is also home to some very interesting amphibians. There are three types of stefania frogs, also known as carrying frogs. These frogs are super special because they are endemic to the park. This means they are found nowhere else in the world!

Unique Frog Species

The three unique frog species found here are:

  • Stefania oculosa (which means "big-eyed Stefania frog")
  • Stefania percristata
  • Stefania riae

These frogs are a great example of the unique life that can be found in isolated places like the tepuis. Scientists continue to study them to learn more about their lives and how to protect them.
