Ernesto Javier Chevantón Espinosa (born 12 August 1980) is a former footballer from Uruguay. He played as a forward, which means he was mainly focused on scoring goals. Javier was known for being fast, strong, and very determined on the field. He also got a Spanish passport after playing in Spain for several years.

Club Career

Playing for Lecce

Javier Chevantón joined the Italian club U.S. Lecce in 2001. In his first season, he scored 12 goals in 27 games. Even though he scored many goals, Lecce was moved down to a lower league called Serie B.

Chevantón decided to stay with the team. He helped them a lot by scoring 18 goals in 30 games. This helped Lecce get promoted straight back to the top league! In the 2003–04 Serie A season, he scored 19 goals, making him the fourth-highest goal scorer in the league. He also became Lecce's all-time top scorer, passing Pedro Pablo Pasculli.

Time at Monaco

In July 2004, Chevantón moved to Monaco, a French club, signing a four-year contract. Monaco had just lost some key players, so they needed new forwards.

Unfortunately, Javier got injured in August 2004 and again in January 2005. He finally scored his first goal in the French league (Ligue 1) in April 2005. That season, he scored 10 league goals, which was a good number for the team. Monaco also didn't do well in the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League that year.

In the 2005–06 season, Chevantón became a main striker for Monaco. He had another knee operation in January 2006 but returned to play in February. He finished the season as Monaco's top scorer in the league with 10 goals.

Success with Sevilla

On 1 August 2006, Chevantón joined Sevilla in Spain. Sevilla had just won the 2005–06 UEFA Cup. He signed a five-year contract with them.

Javier started his time at Sevilla with a back injury. But he soon scored four goals for Sevilla in the UEFA Cup. He scored his first goal in the Spanish league (La Liga) with an amazing bicycle kick against Real Madrid in December 2006. This goal helped Sevilla win 2–1. Later that season, he scored another goal against Real Madrid with a great free kick.

Later Career Clubs

In November 2009, Chevantón was allowed to try out for the Italian club Atalanta. He joined them on loan in January 2010 until the end of the season.

On 23 August 2010, Chevantón returned to his old club Lecce. His contract with Sevilla had ended.

In July 2011, Lecce did not renew his contract, and he moved to the Argentinian team Colón de Santa Fe.

In the summer of 2012, he joined Lecce for a third time! By then, Lecce was in a lower league because they had been moved down and then kicked out of Serie B due to a football scandal.

On 25 September 2013, Chevantón signed a short-term deal with Queens Park Rangers (QPR), an English club. He played his first game for QPR on 5 October 2013, coming on as a substitute in a 2–0 win against Barnsley. QPR released him on 24 December 2013.

After leaving QPR, Chevantón went back to Uruguay. He signed a contract with Liverpool F.C. (Montevideo).

International Matches

Javier Chevantón played for the Uruguay national team. However, he didn't play as much as he could have because of disagreements with the team's coach, Jorge Fossati. For example, he was not chosen for the final games of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers. Uruguay did not make it to the 2006 World Cup.

After a long time away, Chevantón was called back to the Uruguay squad in September 2008 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. This happened partly because Diego Forlán was injured. Chevantón played as a substitute against Argentina. However, he was not called up again after that due to his fitness and strong competition from other top Uruguayan strikers.
