Jesús Javier de Hoz Bravo (born July 29, 1940 – died January 12, 2019) was a Spanish philologist and a university professor. A philologist is someone who studies language in written historical sources.
He spent his career researching many interesting topics. These included old languages from Spain, how languages change over time, and ancient Celtic languages. He also studied the history of writing, early Greek literature, and ancient Greek theatre.
His Life and Education
Javier de Hoz was born in Madrid, Spain, on July 29, 1940. He loved studying languages and history.
He earned his PhD in Philology in 1966 from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. This is a very important university in Spain.
Teaching Career
After finishing his studies, Javier de Hoz became a professor. He taught at several universities:
- From 1967 to 1969, he taught at the Universidad de Sevilla.
- From 1969 to 1989, he was a professor at the Universidad de Salamanca. While there, he also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Philology from 1981 to 1985.
- He also directed the Colegio Trilingüe of Salamanca from 1970 to 1984. This school focused on three languages.
- Finally, from 1989 until he retired in 2010, he taught at the Universidad Complutense. Here, he specialized in Greek Philology and Indo-European Studies.
Important Roles
Beyond teaching, Javier de Hoz played several important roles. He was an expert advisor for UNESCO, helping with the study of Celtic cultures. This was from 1984 to 1999.
He was also a member of the Council of Patronage for the Fundación Pastor de Estudios Clásicos. This foundation supports the study of classical subjects.
He directed a project called Hesperia. This project created a database for information about ancient languages from the Iberian Peninsula.
Javier de Hoz passed away on January 12, 2019, at the age of 78.
