Where is Jayena?
Jayena is found in the southern part of Spain. It sits just north of a big natural area called the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. This park is famous for its amazing mountains and wildlife.
The Great Earthquake of 1884
Jayena has a special place in history because of a very strong earthquake. This earthquake happened on December 25, 1884. It was a difficult time for the town.
What Happened?
More than half of the houses in Jayena were completely destroyed. The rest of the homes were badly damaged. At first, about 10 to 11 people were reported to have died. Sadly, this number later went up to 17. Also, 18 people were seriously hurt.
Aftershocks
After the main earthquake, many smaller quakes, called aftershocks, were felt. From December 25, 1884, to January 16, 1885, people felt 87 aftershocks. This shows how powerful and long-lasting the earthquake's effects were on the area.
