The Jaynes Covered Bridge is a really old and special bridge in Waterville, Vermont. It's a type of bridge called a covered bridge, which means it has walls and a roof, like a long tunnel. This bridge carries Codding Hollow Road over the North Branch Lamoille River.
It was built way back in 1877. The Jaynes Covered Bridge is one of three old covered bridges from the 1800s that are still standing in Waterville. It's also one of five covered bridges that cross the North Branch Lamoille River within just five miles! Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

What Does the Jaynes Covered Bridge Look Like?
The Jaynes Covered Bridge is located in the northern part of Waterville. You can find it a short distance east of Vermont Route 109 on Codding Hill Road. It crosses the North Branch Lamoille River, which flows south through the village of Waterville.
How Big is the Bridge?
This bridge is a single-span structure, meaning it crosses the river in one continuous section. It uses a special design called a queen post truss. This design helps the bridge be strong and stable.
The bridge is about 56.5 feet (17.2 m) long and 15 feet (4.6 m) wide. The part where cars drive is about 12 feet (3.7 m) wide, which means it's only wide enough for one lane of traffic at a time.
Materials and Design
The bridge has a metal roof that comes to a point, like a house roof. Its outside walls are made of vertical wooden boards. These boards stop just before the roof, leaving a small gap.
Over the years, some parts of the bridge have been updated. The original wooden bridge deck (the floor where cars drive) was replaced. Now, it has strong steel I-beams covered with wooden planks. This means the original wooden truss parts mostly support the roof and walls, not the heavy traffic. Also, the places where the wooden parts of the truss connect have been made stronger with steel plates.
The History of the Jaynes Covered Bridge
The Jaynes Covered Bridge was built around 1877. We don't know who exactly built it, but it has stood strong for many, many years!
Why is This Bridge Special?
This bridge is one of three very old bridges in Waterville. All three of these historic bridges cross the same river. If you also count two more covered bridges in the nearby town of Belvidere, you'll find a lot of old covered bridges in a small area! This makes it one of the places in Vermont with the most covered bridges on a single waterway. It's like a special collection of old bridges!
