Jayshree Ullal was born in London, England, on March 27, 1961. Her family was from India. She grew up in New Delhi, India, and went to school there.
She later moved to the United States for college. In 1981, she earned a degree in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University. She continued her studies at Santa Clara University, where she received a master's degree in engineering management and leadership in 1986.
Career Journey
Starting Her Career
Jayshree Ullal began her career at a company called Fairchild Semiconductor. She then joined Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). At AMD, she helped design special computer chips that could store information very quickly.
In 1988, she started working at Ungermann-Bass. There, she was in charge of the part of the company that focused on connecting different computer networks.
In 1992, Ullal became the vice-president of marketing at Crescendo Communications. This company made products for fast computer networks. She helped develop new ways to connect computers using special cables and worked on early forms of Ethernet switching, which helps direct data traffic on a network.
Working at Cisco
In September 1993, a big company called Cisco Systems bought Crescendo Communications. This was Cisco's first time buying a company that made network switches. Jayshree Ullal joined Cisco and started working on their Catalyst switching business. This part of Cisco grew from a small beginning in 1993 to a huge business by 2000.
