The Jazz Kitchen

The Jazz Kitchen is a famous music club and restaurant located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It's a special place where you can enjoy live jazz music from talented musicians. The club features many different jazz artists, from local favorites to well-known national stars. The Jazz Kitchen first opened its doors in 1994. It's found in the Meridian-Kessler/South Broad Ripple neighborhood, at 54th Street and College Avenue. In 2009, a magazine called Down Beat named The Jazz Kitchen one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world! The club is owned by David Allee, whose father, Steve Allee, is also a jazz musician and composer.

In 2009, The Jazz Kitchen made some important changes. It became a "smoke-free" place, which means no smoking is allowed inside. Also in February 2009, The Jazz Kitchen teamed up with Owl Studios and the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. Together, they started organizing the Indy Jazz Fest, which is a big music festival held every June. The Jazz Kitchen is also known for its great food. In 2012, it won an award from OpenTable, being listed among the Top 100 Late-Night Dining Restaurants in the country.

Many amazing musicians have played at The Jazz Kitchen. These include Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, Victor Wooten, Larry Coryell, Lavay Smith, Pharez Whitted, Jon Faddis, Kathy Kosins, Yellowjackets, Frank Glover, Joey DeFrancesco, Terence Blanchard, J. J. Johnson, Simone, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and Ray Brown.

Memorable Performances

Some very special performances have happened at The Jazz Kitchen:

  • In March 1995, J. J. Johnson played for three nights with his final music group. These were his last shows before he retired from performing.
  • In May 2002, Harry Connick Jr. and his band performed at the club. His performance was so popular that the club hired a security guard for the very first time!
