Jean-Étienne Montucla (born September 5, 1725 – died December 18, 1799) was a French mathematician and historian. He was born in Lyon, France. Montucla is famous for writing one of the first major histories of mathematics.

Early Life and Work

Jean-Étienne Montucla showed a strong interest in mathematics from a young age. In 1754, he wrote a book about 'quadrature', which is a way to find the area of shapes. This book was called Histoire des recherches sur la quadrature du cercle.

His real passion was the history of mathematics. In 1758, he published the first part of his most important work, Histoire des Mathématiques. This book was a huge project. It covered the history of mathematical sciences. Some people even called it a history of science from a mathematical point of view.

Career and Challenges

Montucla had several important jobs during his life. In 1758, he became a secretary in Grenoble. Later, in 1764, he was a secretary for an expedition to colonize Cayenne. By 1765, he was the chief architect and a censor for mathematical books. This meant he reviewed books before they could be published.

In 1778, he helped re-edit a book called Recreations mathématiques by Jacques Ozanam. This book was later published in English.

The French Revolution (which started in 1789) caused Montucla to lose his income. This left him in a very difficult situation. In 1795, he was offered a job as a mathematics professor in Paris. However, he had to turn it down because he was not well. He was still struggling financially in 1798. Despite this, he managed to publish a second edition of the first part of his Histoire.

Completing His Great Work

Jean-Étienne Montucla died on December 18, 1799, in Versailles, France. He was not able to finish his massive Histoire des Mathématiques before he passed away.

After his death, another famous mathematician named Jérôme Lalande took over the project. With help from other experts, Lalande completed the third and fourth volumes of the Histoire. These final parts were published in Paris between 1799 and 1802.

Impact of Histoire des Mathématiques

Historians consider Montucla's Histoire a very important book. The first two volumes covered ancient Greek, Roman, and Eastern mathematics. They also looked at geometry, mechanics, and optics up to the 1600s. The later volumes, completed by Lalande, covered all aspects of mathematics in the 1700s. The entire work was about 3000 pages long and included helpful indexes.

One interesting thing about the book is that it often described mathematical ideas using words instead of symbols. This meant some basic details of mathematics were not fully explained. Still, it was a huge step forward in recording the history of mathematics.
