Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Élie de Beaumont (born in 1732 in Carentan, died on January 10, 1786, in Paris) was an important French lawyer. He came from an old Norman family who were Protestants.

A French Lawyer Who Fought for Justice

Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Élie de Beaumont became a lawyer in 1752. He worked for the Parlement (a type of high court) in Normandy. Later, he became a well-known lawyer in Paris.

Unfortunately, he had poor health, which stopped him from speaking in court. Instead, he started writing legal papers called "briefs." In these writings, he showed a strong sense of fairness. He was very good at explaining facts and finding important evidence. This made him famous across Europe.

The Famous Calas Affair

Élie de Beaumont is most famous for a special legal paper he wrote in 1762. It was called Memoir for the Children of Calas. This paper was about a very important case known as the Calas affair.

He played a big part in helping the Calas family. Because of his efforts, many Protestants were very grateful to him. He earned a great reputation for helping people find justice.

A Respected Figure

In 1765, Élie de Beaumont was recognized for his work. He was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists and thinkers in London.
