A Brave Soldier's Journey

Jean-Baptiste Budes was born in 1602 at a place called Plessis-Budes in Brittany, France. His family was from this region. He started his career as a soldier in the Netherlands.

Fighting in the Thirty Years' War

Later, Guébriant became a key figure in the Thirty Years' War. This was a very large and important war that took place in Europe. From 1638 to 1639, he led the French soldiers who were part of the army of his friend, Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar. Guébriant showed great bravery and skill, especially during the siege of Breisach in 1638.

After Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar passed away, Guébriant took over command of his army. He then worked with a Swedish general named Johan Banér to plan a bold attack on a city called Regensburg in 1640.

Great Victories and a High Rank

Guébriant achieved important victories that made him famous. He won battles at Wolfenbüttel on June 29, 1641, and at Kempen in 1642. Because of these successes, he was given the "marshal's baton." This was a special symbol that meant he had become a marshal, which was the highest military rank in France.

Guébriant later tried to invade a region called Bavaria with another general named Lennart Torstensson. Although that attempt didn't fully succeed, he managed to capture the town of Rottweil. Sadly, he was seriously injured there on November 17, 1643, and passed away about five or six days later.
