Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Jean Vilnet was born in a town called Chaumont, France. He decided to dedicate his life to the Church from a young age. He became a priest on October 22, 1944. This was an important step in his religious journey.
Serving as a Bishop
Vilnet was chosen to become a bishop on September 24, 1964. His first role as a bishop was in the Diocese of Saint-Dié. He was officially consecrated as a bishop on December 13, 1964. This ceremony made him a full bishop.
A Surprising Event
On June 16, 1968, Bishop Vilnet was involved in a car accident. The other driver in this accident was Mitt Romney. Romney later became a very famous politician in the USA. He even ran for president.
Leading in Lille
Bishop Vilnet was later appointed to lead the Diocese of Lille. This happened on August 13, 1983. He served the people of Lille for many years. He retired from his duties on July 2, 1998.
