The Jean-Larose River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Sainte-Anne River. The Sainte-Anne River then flows into the mighty Saint Lawrence River.

The Jean-Larose River runs through different areas. These include Lac-Pikauba, Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges, and Beaupré.

The lower part of the river valley has a road called Boulevard les Neiges (Route 360). Another road, Chemin du rang Saint-Julien, serves the middle part. People mostly use this valley for fun activities like hiking and skiing. Logging is also an important activity here.

The river usually freezes from early December to late March. It's safest to walk on the ice from mid-December to mid-March. The water level changes with the seasons and how much rain falls. Big floods often happen in March or April.

Where the River Flows

The Jean-Larose River starts in a small mountain lake. This lake is located northwest of Mont-Sainte-Anne. The river's source is in the area of Lac-Pikauba.

From its source, the river flows around Mont-Sainte-Anne. It even goes through the Parc du Mont Saint-Anne. The Jean-Larose River travels about 21.5 km (13.4 miles). It drops 618 meters (2,028 feet) from its source to where it meets another river.

River's Journey

The river's path is like a natural staircase carved into stone. It has many waterfalls and fast-flowing sections called rapids.

Near the end of its journey, the water drops 69 meters (226 feet). This creates the beautiful Jean-Larose Falls, also known as "Larose Falls." The river then flows into the Sainte-Anne River in Beaupré.

This meeting point is very close to a dam on the Sainte-Anne River. From here, the Sainte-Anne River flows about 3.0 km (1.9 miles). It passes through downtown Beaupré before reaching the Saint Lawrence River.

Why is it Called Jean-Larose?

The river is named after a man called Jean Belleau, who was also known as Larose. In 1725, he and his brother Pierre received land near the falls. However, we are not completely sure if the river was named directly after him.

In 1769, a flour mill was built on the river's banks. This mill was used until it was destroyed by a fire in 1900. The name "Jean Larose river" has been used since the 1800s. But on a map from 1815, it was called "Rivière à la Rose."

The name "Rivière Jean-Larose" officially became its name on December 5, 1968. This was decided by the Quebec Place Names Bank.
