Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber (born October 31, 1937 – died November 28, 2020) was a famous French journalist. He helped start important magazines like L'Expansion and Psychologies. He also founded Radio Classique, a classical music radio station. Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber wrote many books too.

Early Life and Family

Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber was born on October 31, 1937. His birthplace was Boulogne-Billancourt, a town in France. His father, Émile Servan-Schreiber, was also a journalist. His mother's name was Denise Bresard.

The Servan-Schreiber family is very large. They have big family reunions every five years. Jean-Louis grew up in a family where many people were journalists.

When he was a child, Jean-Louis wanted to be a psychoanalyst. But because of his family's background, he chose to become a journalist instead. He studied at Sciences Po, a well-known university, and finished his studies in 1960.

A Career in Journalism

Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber became a successful journalist. He started his career writing for Echos. This newspaper was co-founded by his own father. Later, he worked for L'Express. His brother, Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber, had started this magazine.

Jean-Louis had spent time teaching at Stanford University in the United States. There, he learned about American news magazines. He used this knowledge to help his brother change L'Express. They made it the first magazine of its kind in France.

Starting His Own Companies

In 1967, Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber decided to start his own media company. He teamed up with Jean Boissonnat to create L'Expansion. They launched the magazine L'Expansion together that same year.

He also helped start Lire magazine in 1975. He worked with Bernard Pivot on this project. Jean-Louis was a director at L'Expansion for 27 years. He even helped it grow to have different versions in other countries.

In 1982, he founded Radio Classique. This was a radio station that played classical music. From 1994 to 1997, he owned La Vie Éco. This was a newspaper in Morocco. He got special permission from Morocco's prime minister to own it.

Leading Psychologies Magazine

In 1997, Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber took over Psychologies magazine. He made it much more popular. Its circulation grew from 75,000 copies to 350,000 copies. This made it the second best-selling women's monthly magazine in France. He sold Psychologies in 2008.

He founded another magazine called Clés in 2010. His L'Expansion group also ran other publications. These included La Vie Financière, La Lettre de L’Expansion, and La Tribune.

During the 1970s, Jean-Louis often appeared on a TV show called Questionnaire. He wrote many books and essays during his career. He also served as the chairman of the French part of Human Rights Watch starting in 2007. People often called him by his initials, JLSS.

Personal Life

Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber was married two times. His first wife was Claude Sadoc. They got married in 1957 and had four children together. In 1987, he married his second wife, Perla.

Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber passed away on November 28, 2020. He was 83 years old. He died from COVID-19.
