Jean-Pierre Cassel (born Jean-Pierre Crochon; 27 October 1932 – 19 April 2007) was a famous French actor. He was known for his roles in many movies, plays, and TV shows. He was also a talented dancer.

Early Life and Discovery

Jean-Pierre Cassel was born in Paris, France, on October 27, 1932. His birth name was Jean-Pierre Crochon. His mother, Louise-Marguerite, was an opera singer, and his father, Georges Crochon, was a doctor.

Jean-Pierre loved to dance. He was discovered by the famous American actor and dancer Gene Kelly. Kelly saw Jean-Pierre tap dancing on stage. This led to Jean-Pierre getting a part in the 1957 film The Happy Road.

A Career in Film

Jean-Pierre Cassel became well-known in the late 1950s. He often played the hero in funny movies made by director Philippe de Broca, like Male Companion. He also had an important role as 'Jean François Jardie' in the serious French resistance film L' Armée des ombres.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Jean-Pierre worked with many famous directors from different countries.

  • He worked with Claude Chabrol in The Breach.
  • He was in The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) by Luis Buñuel.
  • He played a Frenchman in the comedy Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965).
  • He was King Louis XIII in the adventure films The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974).
  • He also appeared in the mystery film Murder on the Orient Express.

In later years, he continued to act in many films. He was in Robert Altman's fashion movie Prêt-à-Porter (1994). He also played Dr. Paul Gachet in Vincent & Theo (1990), a film about the painter Vincent van Gogh.

In 2006, when he was 74, Jean-Pierre Cassel went back to the stage. He performed a show called Jean-Pierre Cassel chante et danse Gainsbourg Suite. This show honored his old friend, the French composer Serge Gainsbourg. It included some songs that had never been released before.

One of his last film roles was in 2007. He played two characters in the movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Throughout his long career, Jean-Pierre Cassel acted in more than 110 films. He also performed in fifty stage plays and many musical shows and TV programs.

Jean-Pierre Cassel had three children.

Jean-Pierre Cassel passed away on April 19, 2007, at the age of 74. He died from cancer.
