Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jean Baudoin (1662–1698) was a French Sulpician priest who worked as a missionary in Acadia. He also served as a chaplain during military trips led by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville.

Early Life and Calling

Jean Baudoin was born in 1662. He first studied at the College of Nantes. At that time, he wanted to become a Musketeers of the Guard, who were famous soldiers protecting the French king.

However, Jean Baudoin later decided to become a priest. He studied with a group of priests called the Sulpicians. In 1685, he became an ordained priest. He really wanted to be a missionary, which means someone who travels to new places to share their faith. So, he went to Acadia.

Time in Acadia

Jean Baudoin arrived in Port-Royal in 1688. He soon moved to Beaubassin. While there, he had some disagreements with the governor, Joseph Robineau de Villebon.

Some people in the area also had concerns. They felt he spent too much time with the Miꞌkmaq people and not enough time with his own church members. They also complained that Sunday church services didn't have a regular schedule. This was a problem because many people had to walk very far to attend. Because of these issues, he was asked to return to Quebec and then to France.

A Chaplain in War

During a conflict known as King William's War, Jean Baudoin returned to Acadia. He came back with Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, a famous military leader. Their mission was to fight against the English.

Jean Baudoin helped in important battles like the Siege of Pemaquid and the Avalon Peninsula Campaign. He served as a chaplain, providing spiritual support to the soldiers. He was also very knowledgeable about the area, which made him a valuable expert. Some historians even call the fighting in New England, Acadia, and Newfoundland "Father Baudoin's War" because of his important role.

Jean Baudoin passed away in 1698 at Beaubassin, Acadia.
