Jean Boht (born 6 March 1932 – died 12 September 2023) was an English actress. She was most famous for playing the role of Nellie Boswell in the TV show Bread. This popular sitcom was created by Carla Lane. Jean Boht was one of the few actors who stayed with the show for all seven of its series, from 1986 to 1991.

Early Life and Education
Jean Boht was born as Jean Dance on 6 March 1932. Her birthplace was Bebington, which was then in Cheshire, England. Her mother, Edna May "Teddy" Dance, was a talented pianist. Jean went to school at Wirral Grammar School for Girls.
Acting Career Highlights
Jean Boht began her acting journey at the Liverpool Playhouse. She trained there and started her career as a theatre actress. She then toured around the United Kingdom, performing in many plays. She worked in famous places like the West End Theatres in London, the Royal National Theatre, and the Bristol Old Vic.
Her career on screen lasted from 1962 to 2018. She mostly appeared in television shows. She had guest roles in many popular series, including Softly, Softly (1971), Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em (1978), Grange Hill (1978), and Last of the Summer Wine (1978). She also appeared in Boys from the Blackstuff (1982), Scully (1984), and Juliet Bravo in the mid-1980s.
Starring in Bread
Jean Boht became very well-known for her main role in the sitcom Bread. She played Nellie Boswell, the strong mother of the Boswell family. The show was incredibly popular, with about 20 million viewers watching each episode.
In 1989, Jean Boht was featured on the TV show This Is Your Life, which celebrates famous people's lives. In 2008, she made a guest appearance in the BBC One daytime TV soap, Doctors.
Other Notable Roles
Jean Boht also starred in The Brighton Belles. This was a British version of the American sitcom The Golden Girls. Jean played Josephine, a character similar to Sophia Petrillo from the original show.
On stage, she performed with actor Jeremy Irons in a play called Embers (2006) at the Duke of York's Theatre in London.
Jean Boht also appeared in films. These included Mothers and Daughters (2004) and the award-winning short film Bad Night for the Blues (2010), directed by Chris Shepherd.
Personal Life and Later Years
Jean Boht's first marriage to William Boht ended in divorce. She later married Carl Davis, an American-British conductor and composer, on 28 December 1970. They had two daughters, Hannah (born 1972) and Jessie (born 1974), who both became filmmakers. Jean and Carl were executive producers for Hannah Davis's film The Understudy. They even appeared in the film together as a married couple. Sadly, Carl Davis passed away on 3 August 2023, just a short time before Jean.
In her later years, Jean Boht was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. She lived at Denville Hall, a special retirement home in Northwood, London, for actors and other people from the entertainment world.
Jean Boht passed away on 12 September 2023, at the age of 91. Her death was due to complications from dementia.
Awards and Recognition
Jean Boht was recognized for her talent. In 1990, she won a British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Actress. This award is now known as the "National Comedy Awards."
