Alexandre François Étienne Jean Bouin was a famous French runner. He was born on December 21, 1888, in Marseille, France. Jean Bouin was known for his amazing speed in middle and long-distance races. He competed in the Olympic Games and set several world records during his career.

Jean Bouin: A French Running Star

Jean Bouin was a talented athlete from a young age. He was about 1.72 meters (5 feet 8 inches) tall and weighed around 70 kilograms (154 pounds). He ran for different sports clubs, including US Phocéenne in Marseille and Paris Jean-Bouin in Paris.

Olympic Games Achievements

Jean Bouin represented France in the Olympic Games. He first competed in the 1908 Olympics in the 1500-meter race. Later, at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, he ran in the 5000-meter race.

In the 1912 Olympics, he won a silver medal in the 5000-meter race. He finished just behind Hannes Kolehmainen from Finland. Their race was very exciting and is still remembered as one of the best running moments ever. Bouin and Kolehmainen quickly pulled ahead of all the other runners. Bouin led for most of the race, and Kolehmainen tried many times to pass him. Kolehmainen finally succeeded only 20 meters from the finish line. He won by a tiny difference of 0.1 seconds. Both runners were so fast that they broke the world record for the 5000-meter race!

Setting World Records

Besides his Olympic medal, Jean Bouin set three more world records.

  • In 1911, he set new records in both the 3,000-meter and 10,000-meter races.
  • In 1913, he set another world record for the one-hour run. In this race, he ran an amazing 19,021 meters (about 11.8 miles) in just one hour!

A Lasting Legacy

Sadly, Jean Bouin was killed in action during World War I on September 29, 1914. He was only 25 years old.

Even though he passed away young, Jean Bouin's achievements are still honored today.

  • A famous sports stadium in Paris, called the Stade Jean-Bouin, is named after him. It is home to the Stade Français rugby union club.
  • The French government even made a postage stamp with his picture on it.
  • Many running events have been held to remember him.
  • Since 1920, a 10-kilometer race called the "Jean Bouin" has taken place every year in the streets of Barcelona, Spain.
