Jean II de Rieux

Jean II de Rieux (born 1342, died 1417) was a powerful lord from Brittany, a region in France. He held lands like Rieux, Rochefort, and Ancenis. Jean II de Rieux was a skilled military leader. He first served the Duke of Brittany. Later, he became a Marshal of France, working for King Charles VI. He was also the great-grandfather of another important figure, Jean IV de Rieux.

A Military Leader's Journey

Jean II de Rieux had a long and active career as a soldier. He fought in many important battles during a time of great conflict in Europe. His loyalty shifted between different rulers, showing how complex politics were back then.

Serving Brittany and England

Early in his career, Jean de Rieux fought alongside the English. He was under the command of Edward the Black Prince. In 1367, he took part in the Battle of Nájera. This battle was against the French army, led by Bertrand du Guesclin. The English side won this battle.

In 1381, Jean de Rieux played a role in politics. He signed the second Treaty of Guérande. He represented John IV, the Duke of Brittany. This treaty helped restore the Duke's rights. It also meant Brittany would stay neutral in the ongoing wars between France and England.

Joining Forces with France

After the treaty, Jean de Rieux decided to serve the Kingdom of France. In 1382, he fought in the Battle of Roosebeke. This was a major battle where the French army defeated a rebel force.

His military skills were recognized. In 1397, Jean de Rieux was given a very important position. He was appointed as a Marshal of France. This meant he was one of the highest-ranking military commanders in the French army.

In 1405, Marshal de Rieux was sent on a mission to Wales. He went to help the Welsh people in the Glyndŵr Rising. This was a rebellion led by Owain Glyndŵr against English rule. Jean de Rieux left Brest with over 3,000 knights and soldiers.

Unfortunately, the journey was difficult. Many warhorses died because there was not enough fresh water. However, he did bring modern siege equipment. This equipment was useful for attacking castles.

The French forces joined with Owain Glyndŵr's army. They marched inland and captured the town of Haverfordwest. But they could not capture the castle there. After this, they marched towards England. This expedition was not successful in the end.

Later Years and Retirement

As he grew older, Jean de Rieux faced challenges. His age and many injuries from years of fighting made it hard for him to perform his duties. He asked to be relieved from his position.

On August 12, 1417, his request was granted. He retired from his military service. Jean II de Rieux died in the same year, 1417. He passed away at his castle in Rochefort. He was buried there.
