Occupation Nurse, public health professional

Jean Margaret Martin Pinder (born September 2, 1916 – died September 7, 2014) was an important American nurse and public health expert. She worked for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Africa during the 1960s and 1970s. USAID is an organization that helps countries around the world.

Growing Up and Learning

Jean Margaret Martin was born in Oakland, California. Her parents were George and Mercedes Simms Martin. She loved learning and went to college.

She studied at San Francisco State University. Then, she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1940. She earned a special degree in nursing and became a registered nurse. This meant she was ready to help people as a professional nurse.

Jean continued her education. In 1947, she made history. She became one of the very first Black women to graduate from the Yale School of Public Health. This was a big achievement!

Helping People Around the World

Jean Martin Pinder dedicated her life to public health. This means she worked to keep many people healthy.

She first taught nursing classes at Dillard University. In 1953, she joined the United States Public Health Service. This is a government group that works on health.

Jean became a Health Education Advisor for the country of Liberia. She helped teach people about staying healthy. In 1957, she did similar work in Ghana. She also advised on health policies in Sierra Leone.

Later, she worked for USAID in Africa and in Washington, D.C. She focused on important health topics. These included nutrition, and the health of mothers and children.

In 1968, a US ambassador named Franklin H. Williams praised her. He said Jean and her husband were "unusually efficient ambassadors." They helped represent America well to many Africans.

While working in Washington, she was part of the Women's Action Organization (WAO). This group supported women who worked for the United States Department of State.

Jean Pinder retired from her public health work in 1982.

Life After Work

After retiring, Jean Pinder lived in Tucson, Arizona. She continued to help her community. She even started a free health clinic in a Yaqui community. She also enjoyed playing the violin in the Community Orchestra of Tucson.

Family and Lasting Impact

Jean Martin married Frank Pinder. He was an expert in farming economics. He also worked in Africa, just like Jean. Frank Pinder passed away in 1992.

Jean lived with her friend Elouise Duncan in Tucson for a while. Later, she lived with Elouise's son and his family in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Jean Martin Pinder died in 2014 when she was 98 years old.

Her legacy lives on. The Oakland Public Library keeps some of her important papers. The University of Washington created something special in her name. It's called the Jean M. Pinder Endowment. This fund helps minority students get advanced education in healthcare. This way, more people can follow in Jean's footsteps and help others.
