Jean Poiret, whose real name was Jean Poiré, was a famous French actor, director, and writer. He was born in Paris, France, on August 17, 1926. Jean Poiret is best known for writing the very popular play La Cage aux Folles. He also acted in many films and directed one movie. He passed away on March 14, 1992, in Paris.
Starting His Career
Jean Poiret began his career in the early 1950s. In 1951, he became well-known for his role in a radio show called Malheur aux Barbus. This show helped him gain attention.
In 1952, he met Michel Serrault at the Sarah Bernhardt Theatre. Michel Serrault would later become his good friend and co-star. They performed together in a comedy act called "Jerry Scott, Vedette Internationale."
Jean Poiret also showed his talent for writing. In 1961, he wrote a funny song called La Vache à Mille Francs. It was a parody, which means it made fun of another famous song.
In 1973, Jean Poiret married actress Caroline Cellier. They had one child together.
La Cage aux Folles Play
In 1973, Jean Poiret wrote and starred in his most famous work, the stage play La Cage aux Folles. This play became a huge success.
Later, in 1978, the play was made into a movie. The film adaptation brought Jean Poiret even more fame. Although he didn't act in the movie version of his own play, his friend Michel Serrault played the main role of Zaza Napoli. Michel Serrault even won a special award called a César Award for his amazing performance.
Later Work and Legacy
In 1992, Jean Poiret directed his first and only film. It was called Le Zèbre, which means The Zebra. This movie was based on a book by Alexandre Jardin. Jean Poiret's wife, Caroline Cellier, also starred in the film.
Le Zèbre was very successful. It was one of the top ten highest-earning films in France that year. It also earned a lot of money for a new European film, bringing in about $12 million.
Sadly, Jean Poiret died from a heart attack in Paris on March 14, 1992. This was just three months before his film Le Zèbre was released. He is buried in the Cimetière du Montparnasse in Paris. Jean Poiret is remembered for his humor and his important contributions to French theater and film.
