Jean de la Huerta facts for kids

Jean de la Huerta (born in Daroca, Spain, in 1413 – died in Maçon, France, in 1462) was a talented Spanish sculptor. Most of his amazing artwork was created in the duchy of Burgundy, which is a region in France.
For a long time, not many people knew about Jean de la Huerta. He was quite unknown until the late 1900s. Researchers from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon (a museum in France) helped uncover his work in 1972. This research brought his art to light.
His Most Famous Work
Jean de la Huerta is best known for helping to sculpt the tombs of Duke John the Fearless and his wife, Margaret of Bavaria. He worked on these impressive tombs with another sculptor named Antoine Le Moiturier.
The Ducal Tombs
These beautiful tombs are now located in the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. The job to create these tombs was first planned for a different artist's workshop, led by Claus Sluter. However, the project eventually went to Jean de la Huerta and Antoine Le Moiturier, who completed the magnificent sculptures.
Art in America
You can find one of Jean de la Huerta's sculptures in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. This piece is called "Mourner from Tomb of John the Fearless and Margaret of Bavaria." It is made from alabaster, a soft, white stone often used for sculptures. This "Mourner" was originally part of the large tomb project.
