Mâcon is a city in east-central France. It is located in the Saône-et-Loire department, which is part of the Burgundy region. Mâcon is the préfecture, or capital, of this department.

Even though Mâcon is the capital of its department, it is the second-largest city in terms of population, after Chalon-sur-Saône.

History of Mâcon

Long ago, a group of Celts called the Aedui lived between the Saône and Loire rivers. They built a fortified settlement, known as an oppidum, and a river port where Mâcon is today. Julius Caesar called this settlement Matisco.

Geography of Mâcon

Mâcon is the southernmost city in the Burgundy region. It is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Lyon and 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Paris.

The city sits on the western side of the Saône river. On the other side of the river is Saint-Laurent-sur-Saône, which is a town in a different department called Ain.

Mâcon covers an area of 27.04 square kilometers (10.44 square miles). Its average height above sea level is 257 meters (843 feet). At the city hall, the height is 190 meters (623 feet).
