Jeanette Shakalli is a mathematician from Panama. She is well-known for helping people in Panama get excited about math. She leads a group called the Panamanian Foundation for the Promotion of Mathematics (FUNDAPROMAT). This group works to encourage the study of math across Panama.

Jeanette Shakalli studied at the University of Notre Dame. There, she earned a special degree in both Mathematics and Chemistry. Later, in 2012, she received her Ph.D. in Mathematics. She earned this advanced degree from Texas A&M University. Her advisor, who guided her studies, was Sarah J. Witherspoon.

Her Career in Mathematics

From 2012 to 2019, Jeanette Shakalli worked for a group in Panama. This group was called the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation (SENACYT). In 2016, she started a special program. This program was all about sharing the fun of math in Panama.

Through her program, Jeanette Shakalli has organized many events. These events focus on recreational mathematics. This means using puzzles, games, and fun activities to explore math. She has put together over 50 math events in Panama. These events help make math exciting for students and people of all ages.

Jeanette Shakalli is also a leader in several math groups. She helps plan programs for the Mathematical Association of America. She is part of their group that focuses on recreational math. In 2017, she became an ambassador for the International Mathematical Union. This role involves supporting women in mathematics in Panama. She also serves on the board of directors for the IEEE Panama Section. Additionally, she is on the board of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science (APANAC).

Awards and Recognitions

Jeanette Shakalli has received several honors for her hard work. In 2007, she won the Senior GE Prize for Mathematics Majors. This award is given to a top math student at the University of Notre Dame. The Rotary Club of Panama also recognized her. They named her Rotarian of the Year for 2018-2019.
