Jeanne Bérangère was a famous French actress. She was born Françoise Marie Charlotte Béraud on June 9, 1864. She acted on stage and in silent films for almost 40 years!

Early Life and Stage Career

Françoise Marie Charlotte Béraud was born in Ainay-le-Château, France. Her parents, Pierre and Appoline Béraud, were landowners.

Later, in Paris, she became a stage actress. She started using the name Mademoiselle Bérangère. She became well-known by appearing on postcards. These postcards helped share her image all over France.

In 1909, she got her first movie role. Director Michel Carré chose her for the film La peur (Fear). She acted alongside Henri Desfontaines in this movie.

Becoming a Film Star

After her first film, Jeanne Bérangère signed a contract. She joined the film company Pathé, run by Emile and Charles Pathé. Between 1910 and 1913, she made about 20 films with them.

One of her famous roles was Cleopatra in the 1910 film Cléopâtre. She also worked with director Albert Capellani. Later, she moved to the Éclair Film Company. There, she starred in several well-liked movies. This included Trompe-la-Mort (1913), based on a book by Honoré de Balzac.

During World War I, she mostly acted on stage in Paris. But she did appear in one patriotic film in 1916. It was called Français!...n’oubliez jamais (French!...Never Forget).

Later Film Roles

After the war, Jeanne Bérangère returned to movies. She appeared in Chimera (1918). She also worked with director Marcel L'Herbier in L'homme du large (1920) and El Dorado (1921).

She continued to act in films for many other directors. These included Germaine Dulac, Victor Tourjansky, and Raymond Bernard. She also starred in many movie series during the 1920s. These were films released in several parts.

Some of her notable serial films were:

  • L’essor (Rise, 1920) – This film had ten parts.
  • L’assomoir (The Truncheon, 1921) – This one had four parts.
  • Les mystères de Paris (The Mysteries of Paris, 1922) – This popular series had twelve parts.
  • Belphégor (1926) – This series had four parts.

Her very last movie was La dame de bronze et le monsieur de cristal in 1928. She acted with Marcel Vallée in this film.

Death

Jeanne Bérangère passed away in Paris on November 19, 1928. She was 64 years old.
