Jeff Lampkin was born on September 21, 1961. He is an American former professional boxer. During his 11 years as a professional boxer, Jeff won important titles. He held the USBA cruiserweight title and the IBF cruiserweight belt. He was known for his powerful punches, with 34 of his 39 wins coming by knockout.
Jeff Lampkin's Early Boxing Days
Before becoming a professional, Jeff Lampkin was a very good amateur boxer. In 1980, he won the National AAU Light Heavyweight Championship. This was a big achievement for him.
Later that same year, he decided to become a professional boxer. This meant he would now fight for money. On June 11, 1982, Jeff Lampkin even fought on the same night as a very famous boxing match between Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney. This showed he was already getting noticed in the boxing world.
Becoming a World Champion
Jeff Lampkin's professional boxing career reached its highest point on March 22, 1990. On this day, he won the IBF Cruiserweight Title! He beat a British boxer named Glenn McCrory in London. Jeff won the fight by a technical knockout (TKO) in the third round. This meant the referee stopped the fight because McCrory could not continue.
After winning the title, Jeff defended it one time against Siza Makathini. He won that fight too. But in 1991, he decided to give up his title. This happened because of some disagreements with the IBF boxing organization. There were rules about where fighters could compete, and Jeff felt he wasn't being treated fairly. He believed the IBF was not giving him proper chances to defend his title.
After he gave up his world title, Jeff Lampkin never fought for another major championship belt again.
Life After Boxing
Even though Jeff Lampkin achieved a lot in boxing, like winning and defending a world title, he didn't earn a lot of money from it. He felt that his career was not managed well, and this was one reason he decided to give up his title.
Today, Jeff Lampkin lives and works in Youngstown, Ohio, which is where he was born.
