Jeff Lampkin was an American professional boxer. He was born on September 21, 1961. During his 11 years as a professional boxer, Lampkin won important titles. These included the USBA cruiserweight title and the IBF cruiserweight belt.
Early Boxing Days
Jeff Lampkin had a great start in boxing as an amateur. In 1980, he won the National AAU Light Heavyweight Championship. This was a big achievement! Later that same year, he decided to become a professional boxer.
On June 11, 1982, Jeff Lampkin was part of a very famous boxing event. He fought on the same night as the big fight between Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney. This showed he was becoming a well-known boxer.
Becoming a Champion
Jeff Lampkin's professional career reached its highest point on March 22, 1990. On that day, he won the IBF Cruiserweight Title. He beat British boxer Glenn McCrory in London by a technical knockout. This means the referee stopped the fight because McCrory could not continue safely.
After winning the title, Lampkin successfully defended it one time against Siza Makathini. However, he later gave up his title in 1991. This happened because of a disagreement. Other major boxing organizations, like the WBA and WBC, had rules against boxers competing in South Africa at that time. Because Lampkin had fought there, these groups would not recognize him as a champion.
The IBF, the organization whose title he held, did not offer him another fight for a long time. When they finally did, it was only three weeks before the fight was supposed to happen. This was not enough time for Lampkin to train properly. He felt that the IBF did not want him to keep defending his title. So, he decided to give up his championship belt. After this, he never fought for a major world title again.
Life After Boxing
Even though Jeff Lampkin was a world champion, he did not earn a lot of money from boxing. The contracts he signed meant he received only about $50,000, even after winning and defending a world title. He said that being frustrated with how his career was managed helped him decide to give up his title. Today, Jeff Lampkin lives and works in Youngstown, Ohio.
