Early Life and Education
Jeffrey Pegues was born in 1970 in Washington D.C. He spent some of his childhood in Westport, Connecticut. He later attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. While there, he was a talented athlete. He was an all-state track star and an all-conference football player. He played as a wide receiver and was even a backup to the famous Canadian Football League player Milt Stegall. In his senior year of high school, he was crowned Homecoming King.

Before joining CBS News, Pegues worked at several local TV stations. He was a reporter for WBAL-TV in Baltimore, Maryland. He also worked as an evening news anchor at WSVN-TV in Miami, Florida. At that time, WSVN-TV had the most-watched evening newscast in Miami. In 2004, he covered both the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention. These are big events where political parties choose their candidates for president.
Reporting in New York
From 2003 to 2013, Pegues was a reporter for WABC-TV in New York City. During this time, he won several Emmy Awards for his excellent reporting. He helped bring attention to the story of David Goldman. This was an international fight for a father to get his son back. Pegues also reported during major natural disasters. He covered Superstorm Sandy as it hit New York City. He reported on the rising floodwaters and fires in Queens. In 2005, he reported from Texas during Hurricane Rita.

Jeffrey Pegues joined CBS News on May 29, 2013. He quickly became their Transportation Correspondent. This meant he reported on news related to travel and transport. Later in 2014, he was promoted to Justice and Homeland Security Correspondent. This was a very important role where he covered major stories about law enforcement and national safety.
