History of the Courthouse Building
Early Construction and Purpose
The original Jefferson County Courthouse was built a long time ago, in 1856. This building was designed to be the central place for all county government activities. County government helps manage things like local laws, taxes, and public services for the people living in the county.
Fire and Restoration Efforts
Sadly, a big fire in 1976 caused a lot of damage to the courthouse. Much of the building was destroyed. However, some parts of the original structure survived the fire. These surviving sections were used to help rebuild and restore the courthouse. This means the building you see today still has pieces of its long history.
Becoming a Historic Landmark
In 2008, the Jefferson County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list kept by the United States government. Buildings on this list are important because of their history, architecture, or what they mean to a community. The courthouse was recognized as part of the Pine Bluff Commercial Historic District. This district includes many important buildings in downtown Pine Bluff.
