History of the Statue
When the Monument Was Dedicated
The statue itself was officially revealed on February 22, 1911. A special ceremony took place, which included many school children. They were dressed in red, white, and blue. The children formed a "living battle flag" and sang "Dixie." This date was chosen to be close to the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Davis becoming president of the Confederate States of America. His inauguration was on February 18, 1861.
How the Monument Was Removed
On May 11, 2017, the city of New Orleans ordered the statue to be taken down. Many people were there, some protesting and some supporting the removal. The workers who removed the statue wore special gear to hide their identities. After the statue was gone, its large base and pedestal were also removed. Only the foundation was left behind. The money for removing the statue came from both private donations and the city of New Orleans.
The statue is now being kept in a secret location. The city has said it will be moved to a new place, but no specific plans have been announced yet.
